1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 427, 4-Speed, Nice Driver, 1 Owner Since 1976

Description:

For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1968-69 Chevelle SS has it all. The shark nose front end profile, the bulging rear quarters and upswept rear quarter windows all give the muscle-bound vibe, while those massive big block valve covers under the hood back up the Chevelles powerful presence. Offered here is a largely original and real 138 (the first three numbers of the VIN that indicate a genuine SS) Chevelle SS 396. This SS was originally Tuxedo Black and was repainted sometime in the mid-1970s while the vinyl top was also replaced. As this car was garaged its whole life, the body panels are all original (apart from a replaced right front fender) and rock solid, but the 50-year-old paint ds have some cracks. A set of 15-inch American Racing aluminum wheels wearing BF Goodrich Radial T/As gives it the proper stance. Underneath, the Chevelle is very solid and original. Overall, the SS presents as a nice driver quality example. Inside, this SS features the optional Strato buckets and console. The upholstery is in good shape apart from some minor splits on the driver's seat. The original door panels and dash top are in good shape but the carpet could use replacement. This car has had just one owner since 1976, when it was purchased with about 49,000 miles on it, and it shows in some of the cool, period upgrades he made while he owned the car. A few examples include the sport mirrors, the wood-rimmed chrome 3-spoke steering wheel and the Royce 23-channel CB radio. A more modern upgrade is the powerful Kenwood AM/FM/CD audio system. Rather than the original 396 under the hood there is now a stout 427 from a 1968 Corvette that was factory rated at 390 horsepower. The engine's short block was rebuilt by noted expert Ted Wingate of Hudson Machine while the heads were done by Precision Balancing and Machine. That brawny 427 sports a number of upgrades, such as a big Holley carb and a high-performance Crane camshaft, while the dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers provides the perfect '60s muscle car soundtrack. That 427 runs fantastic and sends its considerable power to the 4.10-geared 12 bolt rear end through a Muncie M21 4-speed transmission, which has a fairly new Centerforce clutch. Manual steering and power heavy-duty drum brakes (wider shs than the standard drums) add to the engaging muscle car experience. Boasting a binder chock full of documentation for maintenance, repairs and upgrades, this genuine Chevelle SS with good bones can be thoroughly enjoyed as is or taken to the next level with some cosmetic restoration and freshening.
