This car is coming out of nearly 50 years of ownership by its previous owner in Southern California. He purchased the car in the mid-1970s when he was young and kept it for decades. In 2009, he decided to complete a 912-to-911 conversion using Motor Meister Inc., a well-known Porsche engine builder. At approximately 19,253 miles, the car was sent to Motor Meister, where a 2.0L engine from a 1968 Porsche 911L was installed. The extensive engine work is documented in the original Motor Meister paperwork and included new main, rod and intermediate-shaft bearings, a new #8 main bearing and seal, new rod bolts, bronze valve guides, Teflon valve stem seals, a complete valve job, new intake and exhaust valves, valve springs and extensive inspection and preparation of the pistons and cylinders. The camshafts, rocker assemblies, oil pump, oil cooler, oil thermostat and related components were also serviced. The engine was further equipped with rebuilt and synchronized twin carburetors, Bosch electronic ignition, a rebuilt alternator, new wiring, spark plugs and other supporting components. Motor Meister also addressed the braking and suspension systems as part of the conversion, including upgraded sway bars, struts, shocks and braking components. The exterior is finished in its original factory color of Metallic Dark Red (30847-L) over a black interior. The car has spent essentially its entire life in Southern California and is exceptionally rust-free. The original floors remain solid and present very well. The interior is in excellent condition and was professionally redone by Gold Coast Auto Upholstery in Ventura, California. Mechanically, the car is powered by the 2.0L flat-six mated to its original 4-speed manual transmission. Because the 912 is lighter than a 911, the larger six-cylinder engine gives this car plenty of pep and makes for a very fun combination. It starts, runs and drives well, the engine sounds excellent, the transmission shifts smoothly through all four gears, and the clutch and brakes feel good. The undercarriage appears dry with no notable leaks. It is somewhat cold-blooded when first started, and we would recommend adding a choke setup for the carburetors. The car also comes with an original owner s manual, original tool kit, spare tire and original California pink slip, along with decades of service records dating back to the 1970s. The tires appear virtually brand new. The 1968 912 Targa is a relatively rare configuration, with commonly cited production figures showing approximately 1,217 912 Targas produced for 1968, out of roughly 7,200 912s that year.
