Description:
This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible was purchased in 2016 by George Haddad, owner of Fabulous Restorations in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Over the next 18 months, it was built into a replica of the Owens Corning-sponsored L88 race car campaigned in the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona. A 427ci V8 with forged internals and Winters aluminum cylinder heads was installed, and it is linked to an M22 four-speed manual transmission and an Eaton limited-slip differential. The chassis was outfitted with a heavy-duty suspension, Koni shocks, and 15" alloy wheels. The body was modified with an L88-style hood, flared wheel arches, a central fuel filler, and covered headlights, while a roll bar and a fixed-back driver's seat were added to the interior.
Interior:
A roll bar has been added to the cabin, which is trimmed in black vinyl. The fixed-back driver's seat has a Simpson harness that expired in 2019. The steering wheel is mounted to a quick-release hub and sits ahead of a clocked Stahl tachometer flanked by Stewart-Warner auxiliary gauges.
Exterior:
The body was modified with flared wheel arches before the car was refinished with acrylic lacquer paint and hand-laid pinstriping. Fixed headlights have acrylic covers, and other details include a removable hardtop, an L88-style hood with locking pins, a central Le Mans-style fuel filler, front and rear spoilers, side marker lights, and coated side exhaust pipes. Five-spoke 15" alloy wheels are wrapped in 9.20" front and 12.00" rear Firestone goldline tires.
Drivetrain:
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie M22 four-speed manual transmission, a 3.73:1 Eaton limited-slip differential with an external cooler, and ZL1-style drive axles. The replacement 427ci V8 was built using cast-iron block with four-bolt main bearings in addition to a forged 4340 rotating assembly, forged pistons, a roller camshaft and rocker arms, Winters ported aluminum cylinder heads, COMP Cams valve springs, a four-barrel carburetor, and Hooker headers.
