1965 Pontiac GTO 'tri-Power' Convertible

Description:

Chassis No.
237675Z105698

Introduced in 1964 as a bold performance package that would ultimately ignite the muscle car era, the Pontiac GTO quickly established itself as one of the most influential American automobiles of its time. By 1965, the model had evolved into a fully realized performance icon, combining aggressive styling, proven V-8 power, and a driver-focused experience that set it apart from its contemporaries. Among the most desirable configurations was the convertible, offering both performance and open-air enjoyment in a package that perfectly captured the spirit of mid-1960s American motoring. Assembled in December 1965 at the Fremont, California plant, this GTO Convertible was originally delivered in Placerville, California, where it benefitted from long-term enthusiast ownership and careful preservation. Reportedly showing just 32,000 miles, the car underwent a comprehensive body-off-the-frame restoration in 2001, completed to factory specifications, and has since been well-maintained, including additional transmission and clutch refurbishment in 2006. Acquired by its current owner in 2007, it has seen limited use, with approximately 7,000 miles added, all while receiving consistent care and attention. Finished in its original and highly attractive Burgundy Red Poly (paint code N) over a Parchment interior, this GTO presents with a timeless and elegant color combination. The paintwork retains strong gloss and depth, with only minor signs of use, while the cars signature stacked headlights and split grille remain in good condition, reinforcing its unmistakable identity. A white power-operated convertible top complements the exterior. The interior is equally impressive, featuring Parchment bucket seats and a matching rear bench, all in great condition. Black carpeting and rubber floor mats provide contrast, while the wood veneer dashboard houses a period-correct Pontiac AM radio and instrumentation. Additional features include a center console, deluxe steering wheel, power-adjustable drivers seat, dual horns, heater, fan, and courtesy lighting. The overall presentation is cohesive and inviting, offering both comfort and authenticity. This GTO is equipped with a desirable WT-code 389-cubic-inch V-8 engine with the famed Tri-Power induction system. Rated at approximately 335 horsepower, this powerplant delivers strong, responsive performance and represents one of the defining features of the GTOs legacy. The engine retains correct identifying numbers 633211, including casting number 9778789 and proper WT stamping, underscoring its authenticity. Power is delivered through a four-speed manual synchromesh transmission fitted with a Hurst shifter, offering an engaging driving experience. Additional mechanical features include a Flowmaster dual exhaust system, Edelbrock intake manifold, chrome valve covers and air cleaners, and the original 3.23:1 Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential. Braking is handled by Delco Moraine self-adjusting drum brakes at all four corners, while the car rides on Hercules MRX IV tires. Accompanied by its original owners manual, window sticker, PHS documentation, and service records, this 1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible stands as a beautifully restored and well-documented example of one of Americas most important performance cars, offering an ideal blend of authenticity, drivability, and enduring appeal. * Comprehensive restoration to factory specifications * WT-code 389-cubic-inch V-8 engine with Tri-Power * Well-optioned, including a four-speed manual transmission * Supported by PHS documentation, copy of the window sticker, maintenance records, and an owners manual From the Kruse Auctions
