Featuring greater passenger room and an upscale presence, Ford Motor Company’s Mercury lineup bridged the price and prestige gap between Ford and Lincoln. This handsomely restored 1948 Mercury Eight 2-door Club Coupe is a fine example from the last model year of Mercury’s prewar designs. Purchased new from the Lincoln-Mercury dealer in Mason City, Iowa by Maude Hanson, this Mercury was acquired by the next owner from her nephew in 1990. A restoration followed, including a repaint in the original Midnight Blue paint color and interior restoration using correct, high-quality upholstery supplied by LeBaron Bonney. The Mercury retains its original 100-horsepower, 230 CI “Flathead" V-8 engine, which was rebuilt during the car’s restoration, paired with a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. Desirable features and options include twin Mercury-scripted Westinghouse Amber fog lamps, a period Fulton steel sun visor, twin chrome Mercury-scripted GE spotlights, and chrome side view mirrors, plus a factory fresh air heater/ventilation system and OEM radio. As offered, the Mercury’s paint, chrome, and interior compartment remain outstanding. The frame and undercarriage are in clean restored condition with stock suspension components in place and the engine and surrounding engine compartment are presented in tidy condition with OEM components in place including the factory air cleaner assembly. Other highlights include front and rear bumper guards, a chrome ‘V8’ accessory exhaust deflector and correct steel wheels mounting smooth chrome Mercury hubcaps and period style BF Goodrich Silvertown tires. A reproduction 1942-48 Mercury shop manual and a show board are also included with the sale of this highly attractive 1948 Mercury Club Coupe.
