The 1949 Fords were all-new and many credit these cars for saving the Ford Motor Company following the war. These are quite modern-looking compared to a lot of their post-war competition, a much more integrated 3-box design that would set the stage for all the cars that would follow. For many enthusiasts, cars like this 1949 Ford Custom Deluxe convertible are the ones to own with their familiar "bullet nose" front end and smooth-running flathead V8s. Dressed in traditional Fez Red, this pretty convertible coupe has a perfect 40s look that would seem at home in a Normal Rockwell painting. Paint and bodywork were reportedly completed in the 1990s but its holding up great with only minor signs of use and a few touch-ups here and there. The slab-sided bodywork is commendably straight and the paint has a soft vintage shine that looks right. The doors close with a reassuringly solid sound, so you know the frame isnt sagging, and its fully dressed with accessories like the hood ornament plus front and rear bumper guards. The chrome and stainless trim is in good condition, with a few original parts working with restored pieces to give it a consistent look.
The two-tone interior is handsomely trimmed in durable vinyl that looks suitable for a car from the late 1940s. The big ivory steering wheel makes this Ford feel lively around town, and rubber mats for the front seat is a Ford tradition going back to the Model T. Of note, the horn ring and steering wheel are in excellent condition, the door panels are correctly trimmed, and all the window hardware is in great condition. All the gauges are operational (although were not sure we trust the gas gauge) but sadly the clock and radio are offline, which isnt unusual. The 3-speed shifter slides through the gates easily and this car is equipped with overdrive, which should make cruising a lot more relaxing. Theres also an accessory Magic Air heater under the dash, along with aftermarket seat belts for front seat occupants. Overhead, the power convertible top is in good condition, although the rear window is cracked but thats easy enough for any glass shop to replace. Theres also a matching boot to give the car a sleek look when the top is down. And like all "shoebox" Fords, theres a massive trunk in back, properly outfitted with a rubber mat, full-sized spare tire thats never been used, and a jack assembly.
The engine is the same durable, torquey, and energetic 239 cubic inch flathead V8 that powered Fords for more than two decades. In 1949, it made a nice, round 100 horsepower as well as all those great sounds that have made these a perennial favorite. We have no information on the rebuild, but it was nicely done as the engine starts easily, idles almost silently, and makes good oil pressure without any smoke out back. Its healthy. It pulls the convertible around without ever seeming to work very hard, and a dual exhaust system featuring a pair of Smitty-style mufflers gives it a traditional flathead sound. The electrical system is still 6 volts, but dont let that frighten you-it kicks over eagerly and works like it should. Youll also note that the engine is neatly detailed with corporate blue engine enamel, a proper oil bath air cleaner on top, and correct hoses and clamps for the radiator. Underneath, its probably original and we dont believe the body has been off the frame. However, its quite solid with no signs of rot or other issues, and any repair work that was done was done competently. 4.10 gears in the rear end mean it feels quick and nimble around town and ride quality is great thanks to modern tube-style shocks. Brakes are manual drums all around, but theyre plenty effective for the cars performance and relative light weight. 15-inch steel wheels wear trim rings and factory hubcaps, as well as a set of 6.70-15 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires installed just a few years ago.
