This extremely well-maintained 1973 Cadillac Coupe DeVille shows what top-of-the-line motoring was like in the early 1970s. GM was still at the top of their game and the Cadillac wreath and crest still meant this car was something special. Of course, dressing any Cadillac in gloss black is going to attract attention, and you can sight down the flanks of this big coupe and see nary a ripple or wave-its laser straight. The finish is mostly original, but the areas that have reportedly been repainted have been so expertly blended that its impossible to tell the difference. The heavy doors swing shut like the proverbial bank vault and all the gaps are even, suggesting that this car has never needed major surgery. The vinyl top is in excellent condition with no signs of blistering or corrosion in the usual spots, and even the fillers around the taillights are excellent. Someone really took good care of this car! And Cadillac was so proud of their 1973 models that they put both a crest on the hood as well as a matching hood ornament, just in case you didnt know what this handsome coupe really was. From any angle, this DeVille makes a statement!
Were especially pleased with the condition of the black leather interior, which appears to be entirely original. Showing just over 68,000 miles, its no surprise that its in great condition, with only minor wrinkles on the outer edges of the drivers seat, but no splits or tears. Open the door and the little solenoids that release the seat back still click, and once youre behind the wheel, you have a wrap-around dash that puts all the controls at your fingertips. Features include automatic climate control, power windows and locks, a tilt steering column, rear defroster, and an AM/FM radio, making this a fairly well-optioned Coupe DeVille. The dash pad isnt cracked, the woodgrained appliques are still in excellent shape, and even the steering wheel with its matching burled inserts is not coming apart-rare for these 70s Cadillacs. Original Cadillac rubber floor mats protect the carpets front and rear, and the headliner is 100% intact and tight. Of course, as a 70s Cadillac, the trunk is massive and includes a full-sized spare, jack assembly, and original cardboard bulkheads in great condition. Theres even a vintage CB antenna, a relic of the pre-cell phone era.
The DeVille was powered by Cadillacs muscular 472 cubic inch V8, which makes the kind of torque that makes even this big coupe feel light on its feet. Its just effortless. It starts easily, idles nicely, and generally acts like a luxury car powerplant should-competent but unobtrusive. Its not made for drag racing, but its smooth and reliable, giving the DeVille great road manners. We dont believe it has ever been opened or removed from the car, and it still wears corporate blue engine enamel and that massive air cleaner up on top. Theres plenty of evidence of recent service, including a tune-up, belts and hoses, and a replacement master cylinder done in the not-too-distant past. The transmission is a TH400 3-speed automatic that is probably GMs best, feeding a rear end big enough for a dump truck thats full of highway-friendly 2.93 gears. This thing just loafs along at todays highway speeds. The undercarriage is original and unrestored, so theres some surface scale on the heavy iron parts, but youll note that the floors and rockers are excellent and theres no structural rot in any of the critical areas. And we believe that might just be the original exhaust system, which has an appropriately hushed tone. It also looks like the front brake calipers are recent, along with shocks all around, so it rides like a Cadillac should-its just a joy to drive. Brakes are powerful, and it sits on 15-inch steel wheels with factory hubcaps and right-sized 235/75/15 whitewall radials.
