1973 Ford Mustang

Description:

This 1973 Mustang doesn't play by the rules of its generation. It rewrites them. Finished in Audi's Mugello Blue Pearl with Italian leather inside, powered by Ford's legendary supercharged "Terminator" V8, and supported by a fully modernized suspension, steering, and braking system, it is a world-class restomod built to challenge assumptions. Backed by nearly $150,000 in documented investment and professional craftsmanship from two renowned shops, this car proves that the early '70s Mustang can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best restomods of any era.

The original restoration was a multi-year effort completed approximately 15 years ago by Kustom Classics of Fort Worth, Texas. More recently, in 2022, the car was sent to Relic Cars of Houston for a comprehensive round of updates that included the suspension, brakes, and interior, with the work completed the following year. Nearly $150,000 in receipts and more than five years of professional labor document the investment, with both phases commissioned by the current owner to create a fully turn-key restomod.

The body makes an immediate impression. The Mugello Blue Pearl paint displays deep metallic tones set off by bold red striping across the hood and decklid. The hood features dual functional NACA-style scoops, a classic Mustang performance cue that adds both airflow and aggression. The long, low proportions of the coupe give it a dramatic stance, further emphasized by polished Asanti wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, sized 275/35ZR18 in the front and 325/30ZR19 in the rear. To accommodate the massive rear rubber, the body was professionally mini-tubbed, giving the car both the clearance and the muscular look those tires demand. At the rear, a spoiler, subtle blacked-out trim, and Borla dual exhaust tips complete the look.

Power comes from Ford's legendary "Terminator" 4.6-liter supercharged DOHC V8, the same forged-internal engine developed for the 2003"2004 SVT Cobra. Originally a crate motor sourced through Panoz Racing, it combines factory-engineered durability with modern performance. Factory-rated at 390 horsepower, this example has been dyno tested at over 400 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels, translating to closer to 470 horsepower at the crank. The power delivery is immediate, responsive, and usable across the rev range, with the supercharger whine building before handing off to the Borla exhaust system for a ferocious finish. A Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission channels the power through a 3.70-geared limited-slip differential. The chassis is anchored by a Heidts independent rear suspension with inboard Wilwood disc brakes featuring cross-drilled and slotted rotors. Steering is handled by a modern power rack-and-pinion system and complemented by adjustable QA1 coilover suspension at all four corners. The result is a second-generation Mustang that feels as capable and composed as many modern sports cars.

Inside, the transformation is just as striking. Red Italian leather upholstery covers the sport bucket seats, console, and rear seating areas, blending luxury craftsmanship with performance-focused design. Power windows are seamlessly integrated into the custom console, preserving the clean look while adding convenience. The gauges are SpeedHut GPS-enabled units with red faces, offering precision and reliability in a classic layout. A Rockford Fosgate audio system provides SiriusXM and Bluetooth connectivity, giving the driver a choice between modern audio and the mechanical soundtrack of the supercharger. Comfort features include modern air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, billet pedals, and excellent overall fit and finish.

This 1973 Mustang is not a curiosity. It is a statement. With dyno-proven performance, extensive documentation, professional build pedigree, and all the modern features enthusiasts demand, it is as practical to enjoy as it is thrilling to drive. More than that, it is a proof-of-concept, demonstrating how thoughtful engineering and investment can unlock the full potential of early-'70s Mustang design.
