1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible The first generation of the Pontiac GTO, produced from 1964 to 1967, is considered the pioneer of the American muscle car era. It was a high-performance variant of the Pontiac Tempest and is widely regarded as one of the first true muscle cars.

Introduced in 1964, the GTO was available as an option package on the Pontiac Tempest LeMans. It featured a powerful 389 cubic-inch V8 engine as standard, with an output of up to 348 horsepower. This engine was paired with a floor-shifted 3-speed or 4-speed manual transmission, or an optional 2-speed automatic.

The GTO's performance, aggressive styling, and accessibility to the general public made it an instant success, capturing the imagination of car enthusiasts and igniting the muscle car craze of the 1960s.

Key design elements included dual hood scoops, a split grille, and distinctive GTO badging. The "GTO" moniker, derived from the Italian Gran Turismo Omologato, was initially an option package but quickly became its own standalone model due to its popularity.

In 1965, the GTO received minor styling updates, including stacked headlights and a restyled grille. It also saw the introduction of the legendary 389 Tri-Power engine, featuring three 2-barrel carburetors, which increased horsepower to 360.

The GTO continued to be a dominant force on the street and the dragstrip throughout its first generation, receiving several engine upgrades and special editions, such as the limited-production "GTO Tiger Gold" option in 1966.

The first-gen GTO established itself as a true muscle car icon, setting the standard for the performance-oriented cars that followed. Its enduring popularity has solidified its position as one of the most coveted and celebrated classics among muscle car enthusiasts and collectors.
