1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Hardtop

Description:

1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Hardtop

In 1968, GM introduced strict wheelbase policies about sizing. But in 1969, they also launched the Pontiac Grand Prix, which was a lot longer than what A-body cars were supposed to be. This became known as the A-body special and later, the G-body. At the time, Chevrolet had a penchant for naming all of its sedans with a "C" " think Camaro, Corvette, Citation, Chevelle, Chevette, and so on. So Monte Carlo was quite the deviation from the line, though it came out later that the name on the file for the Monte Carlo was actually Concours.

This classy 1976 Monte Carlo, named after the large district near Monaco on the French Riviera comes to us via a consignor who is passionate about his 70's Detroit iron. It is a solid all original cruiser that's benefitted from careful use only on an as needed basis, and as a result has a low 41,126 title verified original miles. It would be hard to find more muscle and style for your money with this consignment gracing our Hallowed Halls.

Exterior
Deep end of the pool Firethorn Red Metallic with only a few non noticeable flaws, plenty of brite work, and a square opera window B pillar steel top drapes this '76 "Luxo-Muscle". Look! Up in the sky, it's a muscle car...no its a luxury car!. Some of the chrome is pitted and shows rust and wheel well trimmings are crumpled just a bit. True to form, a 1976 second gen Monte Carlo through and through, it sports a long, long hood, and almost as long trunk deck. There are also stainless rocker coverings. Plenty of square and rectangle 70's design is present particularly with the grille, flanking dual stacked headlights fenders and tail lighting. Produced when cars were cars and status was measured by the inch, we possess a nice winner that oozes success and a piece of red eye candy. Oh, don't forget the contrasting white painted steel top with the rear passenger opera glass for even more class.

Interior
Plenty of white vinyl with red accenting, and the white is the main color for the interior. It encompasses not only the door panels but vertical surface coverings, front split back bench seat, rear bench and headliner. A contrasting red factory dash is in front and is straight and clean. Some burl accenting in wood appliqu© for the dash instruments and radio panel on the lower dash are seen along with some extra round gauges residing next to the burl within 2 additional textured backed panels in front of the driver. A standard GM Monte Carlo steering wheel fronts the dash. We note air conditioning, a clock, and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD radio are also present. Wonderfully preserved and like new deep maroon carpeting is flooding the floors.

Drivetrain
Taking a gaze into the engine bay one catches a glimpse of a factory 350ci V8 engine with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on top. The numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is on back and a 10-bolt rear axle finishes the drivetrain up nicely. The engine is unrestored and the original shows some surface rust and corrosion on it.

Undercarriage
Up on the lift we can see the meat of the operation from underside, we note power steering, power front disc brakes along with power drums on the rear. Single exhaust with a stock replacement muffler along with the usual suspects having some surface rust. The frame is sturdy, as are rockers and floor pans, but all show medium to heavy coating of surface rust. Independent suspension with coil springs provide the ride in front, and a 4 link with coil springs have the rear covered.

Drive-Ability
I love test driving these low mileage large Detroit iron cars, and this one left me with a smile on my face. It fired right up, idled without a trace of being on, and took off in a flash. It is a very smooth ride, with nice acceleration and decent handling. All functions were indeed...functioning

The 76 Monte Carlo is easily the nicest A-Body car that General Motors ever produced due to it not looking like anything else on the road. This example, with its great stance, all good exterior paint and interior surfaces and original engine and you could not ask for anything else, and it delivers with super low mileage. An almost new 48-year-old car, now that's something to be said.
